Having flu-like symptoms once is enough to grasp the discomfort they bring.

Fortunately, homeopathy can assist in controlling those symptoms in the event that you or a loved one experiences similar discomfort in the future.

How can you prepare?

You should keep several single remedies on hand as part of your homeopathic kit during the cold and flu season.
The following are some of the most widely used and their indications in flu cases.

In individuals requiring the remedy Arsenicum album, there is a tendency toward feeling cold, physically weak, and constantly restless and anxious. They may frequently experience thirst and feel the need to take small sips of water. One key indication for this remedy is the presence of watery discharges from a congested or clogged nose.

The person in need of Arsenicum album typically experiences worsened symptoms from exposure to cold air or cold compresses and may find relief with warmth. They also desire company and may have concerns about their recovery.

For those in need of Baptisia, symptoms may arise swiftly, accompanied by a high temperature and fatigue. Common discomforts include widespread soreness and aching, as well as a flushed complexion and strong thirst. Inflammation of the throat, painless in nature, is a key indication for this remedy. Any bodily secretions are likely to have an unpleasant odour.

In the case of Bryonia, the patient typically feels heat and dryness along with a generalised body ache. Any movement makes the pain worse, but pressure makes it go away.
Coughing can aggravate preexisting headaches, causing the patient to hold their head or chest. Additionally, there is a strong desire to consume large amounts of fluids. The individual may also display irritability and a preference for solitude.

The next remedy is Eupatorium perforatum. This remedy is often indicated for patients who experience soreness throughout their body, particularly in the bones, which may feel as if they are broken. Additionally, they may have a craving for cold drinks and a persistent cough. It is also common for individuals needing Eupatorium perfoliatum to experience deep soreness in the eyeballs.

The fifth remedy is Gelsemium sempervirens.
People needing this remedy exhibit a lack of liveliness, energy, and interest, as well as a tendency towards sleepiness. Chills that travel along the spine may be present. The body and appendages experience a sense of weight and fragility. Gelsemium,  thirst is usually absent, and they may describe a dull headache relieved by urination. A sensation of heavy eyelids, as though unable to support them, is also mentioned. Some stiffness in the neck can occur as well.

Mercurius solubilis can cause a creeping chilliness and strong thirst, despite the mouth being moist. Foul breath and thick, smelly, green discharges are also common. Sweating is frequent and symptoms worsen during the night.

The individual in need of Nux vomica is highly susceptible to cold temperatures and may experience discomfort from exposure to drafts. Uncovering can exacerbate symptoms and cause extreme discomfort. Additionally, those who benefit from this remedy are likely to exhibit a distinct emotional state characterised by irritability and agitation. Similar to Arsenicum album, they may also have a congested nose with a runny discharge.

Lastly, there is Rhus toxicodendron. The patient initially finds relief in bed but must regularly shift positions to find comfort. This is due to the stiffness of muscles and joints, which worsens during periods of rest but improves with consistent motion. Thirst is a common symptom, with warmth providing relief and cold or damp weather exacerbating discomfort. Symptoms typically intensify at night, resulting in restlessness.

Instructions for dosing:

After identifying a suitable remedy for your symptoms through the principle of similarity, administer either a 30C or a 200C dose – by placing one pellet under the tongue (allowing it to dissolve) or in water (no need to fully dissolve the pellet), stirring vigorously and giving a teaspoon dosage as necessary.

If dosing an infant, syringe or teaspoon doses may be made by dissolving the medication in water or breastmilk.

Stop dosing when relief is achieved, and only redose if symptoms worsen once more. Remember the rule of nothing by mouth for 20 minutes before and after taking the remedy.
