Caesarean Surgery and Post-Traumatic Stress

All surgeries are traumatic but there is one specifically that can cause emotional trauma.  Some women do experience emotional trauma in addition to physical trauma following an emergency C-section.

In Homeopathy we have remedies for acute grief and trauma. If the traumatic event occurred many years ago, however, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a professional homoeopath who will be able to help you gradually untangle the layers of the experience.

In the treatment of emotional trauma, as it occurs in the acute phase, home prescribers assist the body’s ability to process and heal rather than suppressing and somatizing the trauma.

Suffering happens in the traumas of growing up, in events like wars and economic recessions, in crises, and in personal or nationwide tragedies,’ writes Peter Chappell in his book Emotional Healing with Homoeopathy.

The death of a loved one, a serious sickness, one’s work, or one’s house are all instances of what are known as traumatic crises.

This list of traumas above mentioned may be expanded to include surgery; caesarean section surgery in particular and this is what this short article will focus on.

The treatment for sorrow/grief is not something that “dissolves the grief,” but rather something that allows us to collect ourselves and deal with the process.

When we collect ourselves and deal with our feelings, our children witness us taking care of ourselves and we encourage the emotional growth and development path of our children.

The descriptions of the 9000-plus homoeopathic remedies found in our homoeopathic materia medical assist us, homeopaths, in understanding how different people respond to emotional stress while also shedding light on general patterns of trauma that people experience.

Staphysagria is characterised by intense rage and outrage in response to a harmful act that breaches one’s personal boundaries.  Either the individual will not feel able to say it or they will react extremely furiously to perceived insults. Both of these outcomes are possible in trauma.

Staphysagria is usually used after a sexual assault or for mothers who have had a difficult birth and had to face an instrumental delivery or other intrusive operation such as a C-section that was not planned – even if it may have been necessary.

Staphysagria is one of the many homoeopathic remedies for women who have been sexually assaulted, but this is not the scope of this article.

There are other homoeopathic remedies in our arsenal of 9000 plus homoeopathic remedies which are related to Staphysagria or complementary to Staphysagria that deal with the healing process.

In some women, caesarean delivery does lead to Post-Traumatic Stress. They are left with feelings of guilt, feelings that they failed as mothers, their bodies failed them, disappointment at themselves, anger at the medical staff and much more.

In fact, traumatic childbirth occurs in as many as 25 -34 percent of all births. Approximately one-third of those women may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

PTSD is a complex condition for which it is best to seek constitutional care from an experienced homoeopath, who will match the symptoms you are experiencing to a suitable homoeopathic remedy or homoeopathic remedies during homoeopathic treatment over a period of time.
