Cradle cap is a skin condition that affects many newborns, which is usually seen in the first couple of months and can clear up without treatment.
Symptoms of cradle cap typically include scaly, crusty, greasy patches on the scalp that are harmless, non-contagious and painless. It is not caused by poor hygiene or an allergic reaction or bacterial infection.
However, if it persists for long periods of time or symptoms becomes more pronounced, parents should seek homeopathic therapy as likely it suggests the immune system isn’t functioning optimally.
Cradle Cap is also thought to be caused by excessive production of oil/sebum in the oil glands and hair follicles, or sometimes due to a reaction against the fungus Malassezia that grows naturally on the skin.
Did you know that 80% of your physical body are actually made up of microbes – which are known as microbiome?
Homeopathic medicines for cradle cap are gentle and free of side effects, making them ideal to treat infants.
I list below a few of the homoeopathic remedies used for cradle cap.
Homeopathic remedies should never be based on one or two symptoms only; some main keynotes for each remedy relating to cradle cap are listed below.
Arsenic Album
Cradle Cap is characterised by scabs and dry scales on the baby’s scalp that may extend to the ears and neck. The area appears rough and unclean due to flakes of dead skin falling out when accompanied with hair.
Calcarea carbonica
Scaly eruptions on the scalp with a honey-like discharge that causes the hair to stick together can occur behind the ears and on eyelids. These scabs may disappear after washing, but they often reoccur.
Dulcamara
Characterised by thick brown crusts on the head that may have reddish borders, spread usually around the forehead, temples, and chin.
Graphites
Scales may be found on the eyelids and behind the ear, in addition to the scalp. There is usually an abundance of them and a sticky fluid may come out that causes hair to become stuck together.
Upon washing, they may appear to have cleared off however will usually return shortly afterwards. The scalp may be cold to the touch. In cases of cradle cap, Graphites can help remove the dirty, crusty areas on the scalp.
Kali Sulph
Kali Sulph is a great homeopathic remedy for cradle cap, where the scalp is covered with yellowish scales. These usually appear in large amounts and are often moist and sticky.
Mezerum
Indicated to cradle cap cases with thick leather-like crusts or scabs on the scalp. Discharge from these scabs can cause hair to stick together and white chalk-like scabs may be present on scalp, going even further, they spread to nape of neck and eyebrows, while hair from these areas may fall out.
Natrum mur
A remedy of choice when the scalp is greasy, oily and scaly with a white crust. In addition, it can be useful in conditions where redness over the scalp and scabs form on the scalp, neck, and armpits.
If you’re concerned regarding the severity of an injury, make sure to check in with your doctor; they may need to diagnose or monitor it further.
