Hay Fever and Homoeopathy

Spring, with its warmer weather and blossoms,  is not always the bed of roses the poets liked you to believe.

For people suffering from hay fever,  it can bring misery and unwelcome feelings.
Symptoms including headaches, inflammation of the eyes, nose and throat, difficult breathing and sneezing cause significant discomfort that over-the-counter medications may not be able to solve.
Fortunately, there are natural alternatives to help you through your symptoms.

In this article, we’ll look at remedies you can try right away and discuss how a long-term approach to homoeopathic treatment could end your need to endure the annual onslaught of hay fever.
When pollen enters your body – whether it’s from trees, grasses or flowers – the immune system identifies these as allergens and produces histamine causing physical responses such as light sensitivity, coughing, and itchy skin.

Depending on the severity of your case, you may experience one or all of these symptoms ranging from mild irritation to debilitating intensity. You may only suffer when exposed to certain pollens or even in non-seasonal cases like house dust or pet dander.

No matter the type of trigger or symptom levels you experience there is safe help available from homoeopathy which can provide relief without any nasty side effects.

From a homoeopathic perspective, an overly sensitive immune system is what causes hay fever.

Whenever your body is exposed to an allergen, it releases histamines which leads to the accompanying symptoms. Even when you don’t encounter the allergen, your immune sensitivity remains and will flare up again when you come in contact with your “triggers”.

Generally speaking, people who suffer from hay fever can also show other signs of an overreacting immune system. Maybe there is eczema, asthma, or sensitivity to certain foods triggering their reaction.

All of these could indicate the same sensitivity. It’s possible that one of these symptoms may worsen while another improves.

Homoeopathy can be a great tool to help you manage hay fever or ongoing allergic rhinitis symptoms. Here, I have listed the most popular remedies to soothe the signs that appear during allergy season. Such treatments are mild and work well in relieving your allergies.

Homoeopathy can provide long-term relief, addressing what caused the symptoms in the first place. Through constitutional treatment, it is possible to boost your immunity during the non-allergy seasons and thus reduce the severity of your allergies come springtime.

For more severe allergies, you may require constitutional chronic treatment; however, if managed correctly you can enjoy a life free of such symptoms and look forward to the spring season rather than dreading it.

Homoeopathy is a treatment option that can be of benefit to you in the long run since it treats the deep-ingrained root cause of the chronic health problem.

Homoeopathic treatment can help address the root cause of your allergy/hay fever symptoms. It can also help to support and boost your immune system between hay fever seasons.

With regular treatment, each season should bring a lessening of symptoms, until ultimately, you can look forward to spring blooms without dreading them!

How long this process may take will depend on your medical history and the intensity of your symptoms, so ongoing attention may be necessary.

If you or your loved one needs relief from hay fever straight away, here are some remedies that could help.

Read through these descriptions carefully to determine which one best fits the symptoms of the patient.

There is a large selection of homoeopathic remedies (hundreds and hundreds of them) to choose from, and these are among the most popular options.

If none of these applies to your circumstances, then please book an appointment with me so I can help you find the right remedy for the acute hay fever season and/or also treat you or your loved one with chronic, constitutional homoeopathic treatment addressing the root cause.

Allium Cepa: causes burning and stinging eyes, along with photophobia, itching and swelling of the lids. The nasal discharge is acrid, leading to a blocked nose and a nasally voice.

It causes dryness in the throat and a tickling sensation in the mouth, along with sore lips and nostrils due to the same discharge.
Headache is another symptom along with coryza of mucus membranes. It worsens in warm rooms or during spring and August while open air or cool rooms result in betterment of symptoms.

Arsenicum album: Airways may become congested, leading to mouth breathing, accompanied by intense and painful sneezing that produces a watery, burning discharge.

The upper lip and nose may appear red while the nasal discharge can cause a burning sensation and be experienced as simultaneously runny and blocked up (or alternatively) alternating between one or the other.

Ulcers or scabs can form in the nose and there could also be a dull throbbing frontal headache with light sensitivity (photophobia).

Asthma-like symptoms, such as asthmatic breathing, can occur along with restlessness, anxiety which tends to worsen during the night (generally between 12am to 2am).

Sabadilla: can cause burning sensations in the eyes and nose, as well as an itchy palate and lots of sneezing, especially around flowers. Watery discharge from the eyes and nose is often present, along with a severe frontal headache, fever and red eyelids when exposed to open air or bright light.

Dry mouth without thirst is accompanied by heavy limbs and sensitivity to odours and the environment. Muffled coughing is more frequent when lying down, while general chilliness persists with heat concentrated in the face but great sensitivity to cool air.

Nux-vomica: Frequent sneezing, particularly early in the morning, can be attributed to using Nux Vomica. There may be a congested nose during the night and running throughout the day, as well as irritation of your eyes, face, nose and throat.

Itching in your larynx, trachea and eyes is also common with this remedy. Additionally, the patient becomes easily irritated and sensitive to light and floral scents.

Euphrasia: Eye irritation accompanied by a hot, burning sensation, swollen and red eyelids, blinking and a yellow discharge can be treated with Euphrasia.

Nasal congestion and inner nose discomfort are also relieved through its use. Furthermore, it is beneficial for relieving catarrhal headaches, asthmatic breathing, and coughing which improves while lying down.

Moreover, exposure to the sun worsens symptoms whereas bathing in open air brings relief. Euphrasia is also popularly used as an eye wash.

Pulsatilla: a yellow, watery discharge from nose and eyes that can be susceptible to infection. Intense itching is also present around the eyes, with a feeling of sand or grit in them; this may be relieved by cold applications.

Wheezing and coughing exacerbate when lying down, and with a blocked nose in the evening and free-flowing in the mornings, there is an absence of thirst. Lastly, an itching sensation in the palate can be lessened with cold applications.

Other Self-Help Measures:

Once back indoors from the outdoors, take off all clothing and jump in the shower.

Clean your hair to make sure there are no traces of pollen left behind, then pop the clothes in the wash.

It’s also wise to wear a hat when outside in order to protect your eyes from pollen particles.

On the other hand, low-histamine diet staple foods include green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, lean proteins and certain oils such as olive oil, coconut oil and hemp oil – research a more detailed list of those items online if needed.

Moreover, consider trying out local honey as it is not only tastier than store-bought but also helps reduce hay fever symptoms.

Lastly, quercetin supplement combined with whole Vitamin C ( not ascorbic acid*) may help reduce irritation due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

*A word of warning: : Without further ado, here’s the gist: ascorbic acid is not vitamin C. Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E. Retinoic acid is not vitamin A.
Though ascorbic acid, alpha tocopherol and retinoic acid are all well-known commercialised and promoted  “vitamins”, they are not singular entities.

Rather, these vitamins exist as catalysts requiring the support of additional elements within the body’s bioenergetics in order to be effective.

Vitamins are not individual molecular compounds. Vitamins are biological complexes. They are multi-step biochemical interactions whose action is dependent upon a number of variables within the biological terrain.

Vitamins cannot be isolated from their complexes and still perform their specific life functions within the cells. When isolated into artificial commercial forms, like ascorbic acid, these purified synthetics act as drugs in the body. They are no longer vitamins, and to call them such is inaccurate.

Every day, people mistakenly buy thousands of bottles of ascorbic acid, believing it to be the same as Vitamin C. However, this is not the case – ascorbic acid is an isolated component of Vitamin C, but not the complete nutrient.

So you are being mis-sold  if you buy ascorbic acid thinking it is Vitamin C.

But that might be the least of the consequences you may suffer.

Studies conducted in recent years suggest that those who consume high levels of ascorbic acid may be vulnerable to a variety of health issues. One research, for instance, revealed that doses of 500 mg or greater per day can lead to the buildup of arterial plaque.

Results from a further study indicated that individuals taking ascorbic acid may be prone to developing gallstones.  Are these studies intended to undermine the health food industry? No, the studies are legitimate. That said, it should be also noted that  ascorbic acid  is largely synthesised through GMO corn.

If you wish to take Vitamin C, then get a Vitamin C supplement that has a formula which is made from  Raw Organic Fruits and Vegetables Blend.
