Nose Relief, Heart Risk

Ephedrine, nafazoline, oxymetazoline, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, tuaminoheptane and xylometazoline, decongestants for oral or nasal use, are sympathomimetic vasoconstrictors.

They can cause serious and even fatal cardiovascular disorders (hypertensive crisis, stroke and arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation), as well as ischemic colitis and ischemic optic neuropathy.

Their side effects are not suitable for medicines intended to treat mild, quickly passing symptoms affiliated with a common cold.

It is advisable to avoid this type of drug.

These drugs used on a daily basis can lead to medication rhinitis, as the more a person takes them, the greater extent of nasal obstruction is experienced.

Using a nasal decongestant over an extended period of time can lead to addiction, as well as the possibility of losing one’s sense of smell.
