Omeprazole and Dementia

The use of proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, for example) can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency in the body, which in some cases can trigger dementia.

➡ Proton pump inhibitors (IBP) suppress gastric acid production, inhibiting intrinsic factor activation, and therefore can lead to vitamin B12 malabsorption.

➡With the aim of studying this association between the use of PPIs (ex. Omeprazole) and vitamin B12 deficiency, in the United States, a study was carried out by The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

➡ The conclusions showed that the previous or current use of gastric acid inhibitors was significantly associated with the presence of vitamin B12 deficiency.

➡Vitamin B12 is important for the formation and maturation of red blood cells and is necessary for the development and maintenance of nervous system functions. However, to absorb it, the body depends on intrinsic factors present in a special type of cells that are in the stomach (parietal cells) and on receptors located in the ileum.

➡ In cases of vitamin B12 deficiency, there may be anaemia, accompanied or not by locomotion difficulties, tingling in the hands, feet and legs, pallor, muscle weakness, infertility, dementia, osteoporosis among other symptoms.
