Evidence-based homeopathy: Comparison of Specific sublingual imunotherapy with homeopathic therapy in children with allergic rhinitis.
In this study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, we sought to compare the efficacy and safety of specific sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with nonspecific homeopathic therapy for the treatment of intermittent allergic rhinitis (ARI) and persistent (PAR).
74 children (6-14 years) were randomised into 4 groups: 30 with PAR, treated with SLIT in monotherapy with grass pollen, household dust from mite or from cockroach (15) and homeopathy (15) for 12 months; 37 with RAP treated with SLIT in monotherapy (19) and homeopathy (18) for 5 months.
Homeopathic treatments included Pulmo histaminum, prepared from the lung of guinea pig sacrificed during anaphylactic shock; and Apis mellifica from whole bee extracts.
RESULTS: Both methods showed symptomatic improvement. Homeopathic therapy led to an improvement in PRQLQ* in the PAR* compared to the SLIT group. Objective tests showed no significant difference between the 2 groups. Local side effects of SLIT (specific sublingual immunotherapy) were observed in 3 patients.
The research authors concluded that specific SLIT was less effective than homeopathic treatment in children with allergic rhinitis.
*PAR – Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
*PRQLQ – PAEDIATRIC RHINOCONJUNCTIVITIS QUALITY OF LIFE QUESTIONNAIRE
