Teething and Homeopathy

The process of teething and dealing with temper tantrums is a challenge, but it is simply part of the growing up process. Toddlers need structure, discipline and a calm, understanding and consistent attitude to feel secure in their environment. Establishing this kind of routine will benefit them in the long run.

Teething can be a painful experience when the teeth begin to break through the gums.

Teething babies may be unhappy and irritable as they struggle with sore gums. What appears to be signs of distress may signify the need for two particular remedies.

These include Belladonna and Chamomilla, which are typically for the acute level symptoms such as  used for fever, discomfort, swelling, rashes and volatile behaviour.

At the deeper level of calcium metabolism, remedies such as Calc carb, Calc phos, and Silica are essential for growth – particularly when chronic episodes recur despite prescribed acute remedies.

Acute Symptoms of Teething:

– Irritability
– Increased Salivation or Drooling
– Desire to chew everything and anything
– Diarrhoea
– Disturbed Sleep
– Painful/sore Gum
– Red Cheeks/Flushed Face

If your baby is in distress and upset, you can massage their gums or help them with a cold teething ring, vegetable sticks, or even cucumber. Ensure they are adequately hydrated by giving them plenty of water.

Homeopathic remedies are very effective when it comes to children, and there are excellent options available to help you and your infant during this natural process.

Here are a few of homoeopathic remedies for teething:

Belladonna can help babies who are feeling feverish and in pain, displaying signs of irritability, excessive warmth, and agony. These infants may scream incessantly, bite their hands acutely, and wail while teething.

Chamomilla can be used to treat inflamed gums, excessive salivation, and an urge to put fingers in the mouth and chew while nursing. Typically, one cheek is rosy and the other pale. Loose stools mixed with greenish diarrhoea may also be present. Such children tend to be irascible, screaming and hitting out when they don’t understand what they want. This state usually worsens at night; the only comfort being provided by carrying or gently rocking them.

Calc phos is a remedy for teething troubles that come with a loss of appetite and restlessness. Uncontrollable desires for salty foods, such as chips, are also a symptom. This remedy helps thin, tired children going through rapid growth spurts by improving nutrient absorption and having a tonic effect.

Pulsatilla is especially suitable for teething infants who are clingy, tearful and demand their mother’s presence. They simply cannot bear to be separated from her.

Self-Help Measures to Soothe a Teething baby

Soothing a teething baby can be difficult, but there are home remedies that may offer relief.

Using a clean finger or slightly wet piece of gauze and lightly rubbing the gums is an effective way to reduce discomfort.

Additionally, a cold compress in the form of a wet cloth, chilled spoon or teething ring can help reduce swelling and soreness.

For older babies, providing some hard foods such as peeled carrots or cucumbers for them to chew on could also give temporary ease.

However, it has to be done with caution to prevent choking from small bits being chewed off.
